Bernie Sanders raised $1.3M after email remark

  • by

Democratic presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) raised over $1.3 million in four hours following the first Democratic presidential debate Tuesday night broadcasted on CNN.

His campaign sent out a mass email seeking donations from his line defending Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of State.

For Democrats who had hoped to lure Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren into a presidential campaign, independent Sen. Bernie Sanders might be the next best thing. Sanders, who is opening his official presidential campaign Tuesday in Burlington, Vermont, aims to ignite a grassroots fire among left-leaning Democrats wary of Hillary Rodham Clinton. Sanders’ remark was the most retweeted of any candidate of the night with more than 12,000 shares on social media. It was one of the most memorable moments of the night and led to Sanders dominating attention on social media and online searches. He slightly edged out Hillary Clinton for most Twitter mentions, with 41% of tweets about Bernie and 39% about Clinton, based on metrics released by the social media platform.

Martin O’Malley, Jim Webb, and Lincoln Chafee took a combined 20%.

Sanders gained the most followers on Twitter during the debate and was also the most searched candidate throughout the debate based on data provided by Google.
